Nasal Polyps
-
definition:
Polyps formed by nasal mucosa.
-
etiology:
Polyp formation usually follows the edema and inflammation of a chronic allergic rhinitis, or comes from an acute or chronic sinusitis. If from an acute infection, they may regress once the infection has cleared. They are mostly found around the ostia of the maxillary sinuses, and when mature, resemble a peeled seedless grape. -
signs and symptoms:
• Nasal discharge: watery, albuminous, yellow, greenish, white, blood-streaked, etc.
• Nasal congestion: Can often necessitate mouth-breathing.
• Concurrent symptoms may include: sinus pain; epistaxis (nose bleeds); sneezing; itching/tearing eyes; or other signs of a common cold (slight sore throat etc.). -
