Kennel Cough


  • definition:
    Kennel Cough is a bronchitis that affects the upper respiratory tract. Generally it is a mild, self limiting disease but may progress to bronchopneumonia in puppies or to chronic bronchitis in debilitated adult or aged dogs. The illness can spread rapidly amoung susceptible dogs housed in close confinement eg vet clinic or boarding kennels.

  • etiology:
    The invading bacteria is Bordetella Bronchiseptica.  This bacteria bind directly to cilia rendering them unable to move within 3 hours of contact.  It discrete's a substance that disables the immune cells responsible for consuming and destroying bacteria.  It is common for Bordetella to be accompanied by at least one other infection agent, like a virus. Kennel cough isn't assisted with common antibiotics in this situation. In fact will hinder the dogs recovery, killing off good bacteria needed to fight the viral infection.  Kennel cough is a complex of infections rather than an infection by one agent. Duration of kennel cough when treated correctly is approximately two weeks.
